Advocacy
Every day, our public officials make policies and laws that greatly impact our child welfare, juvenile justice, and behavioral health systems and the thousands of families who are served by them. We need to make sure our voice is heard on these important issues!
How You Can Help
Letters to the Editor
Every day, thousands of people across Northeast Ohio read newspapers. And every day, you can connect with them through a very effective advocacy tool: a letter to the editor. In addition to generating public interest and knowledge on your issue, most public officials specifically read letters to the editors to ensure they know what is on the minds of their constituents.
When writing a letter to the editor, it is important to remember the following tips:
- Try to relate the letter to a recent story or “hot topic.”
- Stay within the word limit; shorter is often better when it comes to letters to the editor.
- Be passionate and personal; frame the issue in your own words.
- Include any information the newspaper requires, such as name, address, telephone number, or email.

Communicating Directly with Elected Officials
Often, the best way to get your point of view across to your elected officials is to contact them directly either via telephone, fax, email, or even an in-person visit. Remember, they want to hear from you. After all, they depend on their constituents to keep their jobs!
